About Bladensburg Maryland
Originally called Garrison’s Landing, Bladensburg was renamed in honor of Thomas Bladen, governor of Maryland, 1742–1747.
A seaport during the colonial period, Bladensburg is best remembered for the Battle of Bladensburg (1814) during the War of 1812, which cleared the way for the burning of Washington by British troops. Its role as a seaport faded as the Anacostia River silted up and larger ships could no longer reach the port.
In 1999, Bladensburg, Colmar Manor, and Cottage City were lauded by the Joint Center for Sustainable Communities for their collaboration with Prince George's County for the Port Towns Revitalization Initiative, which created a common Port Towns identity for the towns; encouraged businesses development through infrastructure and façade improvements; acquisition of historic properties and plans for their reuse; and reconstruction of the Bladensburg waterfront and marina.

The town of Bowie owes its existence to the railway. In 1853, Col. William D. Bowie succeeded in obtaining a charter from the Maryland legislature to construct a rail line into Southern Maryland. In 1869 the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Company began the construction of a railroad from Baltimore to Southern Maryland. By 1872, it was completed together with a spur to Washington DC. The remainder of the railroad through Southern Maryland and Pope's Creek was completed in 1873.
Earlier, the area was dotted with small farms and large tobacco plantations in an economy based on agriculture and slavery. However, in 1870 Ben Plumb, a land speculator and developer, sold building lots around the railroad junction and named the settlement "Huntington City." This has been declared as the founding of Huntington City in 1870.

Woodmore is an unincorporated area and Census-designated place composed of a gated community and country club in Mitchellville, Maryland, one of the most affluent predominantly African-American communities in the United States. The population was 6,077 at the 2000 census. Centered around the country club, the community is planned to consist of 398 single-family homes on 799 acres. The first house in the area was a two-story brick house named Pleasant Prospect, built around the end of the 18th century by Dr. Isaac Ducket, the husband of Sprigg's granddaughter. He also doubled the size of the estate. In 1981 the Country Club at Woodmore was redesigned and the gated community planned, a process which took 15 years as the seven area homeowner associations eventually merged. Woodmore is zoned to schools in the Prince George's County Public Schools.
