Dundalk Maryland - Population: 62,306

The area now known as Dundalk was first explored by John Smith in 1608, when while conducting an expedition up the Chesapeake Bay he landed on the area known as the Patapsco Neck. Up until this time, the area was occupied by the tribes of the Susquehanna Indians. In 1664 Thomas Todd of Virginia purchased 1,150 acres (4.7 km²) of land on the Patapsco Neck, this being the first deed in Baltimore County. The original house, “Todd’s Inheritance”, was burnt by the British during the War of 1812, Battle of North Point. After the war the house was rebuilt, and it still stands today as a historical landmark. In 1895 Henry McShane, an immigrant from Ireland, established the McShane Bell Foundry on the banks of the Patapsco River in the then far southeastern outskirts of Baltimore. The foundry, today gone, manufactured cast iron pipes and furnace fittings.

Towson Maryland - Population: 51,793

The community of Towson began about 1750 when two brothers, William and Thomas Towson, emigrated from Pennsylvania and started farming on Satyr's Hill, to the northeast of York and Joppa Roads. In 1768 Thomas' son, Ezekiel built a large tavern at the crossroads, just north of where the Recher Theater is now. A small village called "Towsontown" began to grow around it, serving area farmers who traveled on York, Dulaney Valley, and Joppa Roads. In 1790, the Ridgely family completed the magnificent Hampton Mansion, then the largest home in America.[1] On the estate, other buildings were erected by the Chews, Shealeys, Schmucks, Phipps, Paynes, Lees, Bowens, Wares, and Bosleys. In 1839, Epsom Chapel became the first house of worship for the community. (It was demolished in 1950, making way for Towson Plaza, now Towson Town Center.)

Essex Maryland - Population: 39,078

Originally, Essex was ten blocks, running from Mace to Marlyn Avenues. It was begun in 1909 by the Taylor Land Company for those residents in Baltimore who wanted a place outside the city limits to perhaps grow a garden or to pursue some other rural activity. Land was cheap and sales were enhanced by a promotional pamphlet. Henry Guttenberger built the first general store in Essex in 1910 on the corner of Eastern and Mace Avenues. Between 1911 and 1912, the Taylor Land Company donated the lots for Essex Methodist and St. John's Lutheran churches. They also donated the land where the volunteer fire department built their station. The permanent fire station opened in 1921. With the ever-growing population came the need to build schools. The elementary school opened in 1925 with 400 students. Essex Community College, now CCBC-Essex, was founded in 1957. Classes were first held at Kenwood High School, with fifty part-time and nine full-time students.

Glen Burnie Maryland - Population: 38,922

The groundwork for Glen Burnie was laid nearly two centuries ago, when, in 1812, a district attorney by the name of Elias Glenn established a county seat near what is currently known as Harlem Park in Baltimore City. He named his property "Glennsburne." The name was changed to "Glennsbourne Farm," and eventually "Glenburnie," as the property was passed through Glenn's descendants. Records also show the name as "Tracey's Station" and "Myrtle," after local postmaster Samuel Sewell Tracey and one of Tracey's boarders, before the final decision was made. In 1854, William Wilkins Glenn, Elias Glenn's grandson, incorporated the Curtis Creek Mining, Furnace and Manufacturing Co. into his family's property. The business flourished during the 19th century, and with it came several thousand acres of land in northern Anne Arundel County.

Perry Hall Maryland - Population: 28,705

In 1774, wealthy planter Harry Dorsey Gough (see Gough-Calthorpe family) purchased an 1,000 acre (4 km²) estate called "the Adventure" north of present-day Belair Road. Gough renamed the estate "Perry Hall," after his family's home in Perry Barr, Birmingham, England, and completed construction of the Perry Hall Mansion, which still stands in the northern part of the community. Harry Dorsey Gough, then, could be thought of as the founder of Perry Hall. The Gough family dominated the life of the community until after the Civil War. The Gough plantation was among the largest in Baltimore County, and Harry Dorsey Gough was an early leader in the Maryland General Assembly, as well as a founder of the Methodist Church. It was at Perry Hall Mansion that plans for the American Methodist Episcopal Church were developed by Gough, his Birmingham neighbour Francis Asbury, and other religious leaders.

Cockeysville Maryland - Population: 19,388

Cockeysville was named after the Cockey family which helped establish the town. Thomas Cockey (1676-1737) settled in Limesone Valley in 1725 at Taylor's Hall (an area now just north of Padonia Road and east of I-83). Joshua Frederick Cockey (1765-1821) built one of the first homes in the area in 1798 and built the first commercial structure (a hotel) in 1810 in what would become the village of Cockeysville. His son, Judge Joshua F. Cockey (1800-1891) lived lifelong in the village and built the train station (what would be part of the Pennsylvania Railroad) and accompanying commercial buildings in the 1830's. Cockeysville was the scene of some Civil War activity. Confederate soldiers pushed into the Baltimore area intending to cut off the city and Washington from the north. On July 10, 1864, Cavalry General Bradley T. Johnson led troops into Cockeysville, destroying telegraph lines and tearing up track along the North Central Railroad.
